Harrison Bergeron

          Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a short story about a family whose son was taken away from them. The story is set in the distant future where everyone is equal, and they make everyone equal by giving them physical limitations so not one person is better than anyone else. I found this story very strange when I read it. The way the husband and wife interacted with each other was very strange and child like. Their mental handicaps caused them to be this way. I also found the way Harrison presented himself on TV was very unusual. His "overthrowing the government" seemed very weird as he danced and floated in the air with a ballerina.

         Harrison Bergeron is based on the issue of equality that is still a part of our lives today. In resent years, the world has fought for equality for all people. This story seems to say that there is no such thing as perfect equality without drastic measures. So in order to create a perfectly equal world, citizens would need to get rid of basic rights such as individuality and education. The world is a better place with diverse personalities, and it is definitely more enjoyable to make your own decisions.

    I really liked the way you described the book. I agree with you I thought it was pretty strange too. I liked the questions you brought up about equality.

Thanksgiving Break

        During my thanksgiving break, the first thing I did was go to drivers ed. It felt just like school because I would have to get up early and I wouldn't get home until four. Although the class itself was boring, my friend Katherine was also there, so that made it much better. Once we were done with class, we would go to the mall or Perkins Rowe. Four days later, we were done with the class, and we could finally relax.           On thanksgiving day, I woke up and watched the parade with my family. This is something I've done ever since I was little. Our thanksgiving meal didn't take that much time because it was just me, my parents, and my sister who were eating at our house. This year was very different because all of my other Thanksgivings were with my whole family, so it was nice to have a small meal with just us four. Once the holiday had passed, I spent time with my friends and took time to relax.

Human Nature

       I believe that humans are fundamentally good, but everyone is different. Everyone starts out good, but they are then confronted with decisions that shape what they are truly like.  I believe this because I have seen people from different backgrounds, parents, and parts of the world. For example, I went back to Tyler, TX, where I lived before here, and I saw how much all of my friends had changed from when we were kids and how different they were from my friends who grew up in Baton Rouge. Growing up in different environments changes the way people think and act.        Even though I think people are fundamentally good, I believe that people have free will to compliment or change that. Everyone in the world is flawed in someway, and that is caused by peoples decisions. Those decisions can lead to changes in judgement. Concert

       This summer, my family and I went on a huge road trip to North Carolina and Washington DC. While we were in the car, we always listened to John Mayer's new album, the Search for Everything. As we listened to it more and more, my whole family started to really love it, and we associated it with our summer. We would listen to it in the car, at cook outs, and just around the house.        As our summer came to an end, my mom asked us if we wanted to go to his concert. I wasn't super excited about it because it was the night before orientation day, so I decided not to go. School was nearing and my sister, Emily, was so excited for the concert, but I didn't want summer to end.
