Strengths and Challenges

After a lot of writing in class, I have found that some of my strengths are organization, and voice. While writing the research paper, one of the things I found most important was making sure I stay on track and that all of my points relate back to my thesis. I have seen this strength develop from the personal narrative, where I would sometimes catch myself drifting from my theme. Also in my writing this year, I have been able to address the rhetorical situation, and choose a fitting voice. For example, in the personal narrative, I knew my audience would want an entertaining story, so I used a more playful voice. And for my literary analysis, I knew my voice should be more formal.

This year I found word choice and conventions challenging. For most of my writing this year, I would try to find words that try and convey the meaning I wanted, but it was hard for me. Also, if I would sit down and write for a while, I would sometimes get sloppy and make simple mistakes in my grammar or spelling that needed to be fixed. Next year, I want to make sure to pay careful attention to detail in order to improve my word choice and conventions. It is important to me to fix these so my writing is as good as it can possibly be.

  1. I also struggle with choosing the correct words to express what I mean in my writing. It's good that you have grown as a writer, and can see what you are good at and what you need to work on. Great post!

  4. I agree that sometimes finding the correct word choice to use can be difficult. Also, I find that when I write for long periods of time my writing will start to have more and more mistakes. Good job!

  5. We've got some differences and similarities. I also consider conventions one of my weaknesses, but I feel like good word choice is one of my strengths. Escpecially after writing my narrative for my choice project, my word choice has gotten better. Good post!

ATDPTI Response

So far, I am really enjoying The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Reading it during the writing process of our research papers really relieves the stress of it all. One thing that I find very interesting about this book is the use of humor. I like that the book is funny but i also think that it is interesting how the author uses humor to discuss more serious topics. However, I think it is fitting for the narrator of this book because of his age. While reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I think it is very interesting how it is written in a diary-like format. If it was written like a regular book, it wouldn’t be nearly as good because you couldn’t see inside Junior’s head as he develops through his journey. Like the writing format, I also think that the pictures add a lot to the development of Junior as a character. In a novel format, the narrator could say that Junior wants to be a cartoon artist, but showing the cartoons themselves really empha...

Fall Break

Fall break is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives me time to relax and do whatever I want. My break started off with having a friend over to spend the night. While she was over, we went to the Episcopal football game and met up with some people there. We stayed until the very end and cheered on the Knights. After the game, we went back to my house and watched some movies.        The next day, we went to the mall. It was so much fun because we got to walk around and shop. One of my favorite stores at the mall is Sephora. We went to Sephora and tested all of the newest make-up and skin care products. After a long day of shopping, we went to the food court and got some ice cream. Once we had both gotten home, I spent the next few days relaxing and taking a break from school.

Concert

This summer, my family and I went on a huge road trip to North Carolina and Washington DC. While we were in the car, we always listened to John Mayer's new album, the Search for Everything. As we listened to it more and more, my whole family started to really love it, and we associated it with our summer. We would listen to it in the car, at cook outs, and just around the house.        As our summer came to an end, my mom asked us if we wanted to go to his concert. I wasn't super excited about it because it was the night before orientation day, so I decided not to go. School was nearing and my sister, Emily, was so excited for the concert, but I didn't want summer to end. The day before orientation day, I went to go get a hair cut, and when I was done it was around 4 pm. My mom asked my on the way home, "Do you want to go to the John Mayer concert?" I was so confused because my sister was about to leave in thirty minutes, and I didn't kno...
