Purple Hibiscus Response

So far, I am really enjoying Purple Hibiscus. One thing that I find interesting it the perspective of the book. The narrator is a young, Nigerian girl named Kambili who lives a luxurious life, however, her father is cruel and abusive. I think it is interesting to see her views about her father even though she is fully aware of his actions. It seems her whole life is revolved around getting his approval and her wellbeing also depends on him. This is seen when Kambili goes to school, and she basically throws away her chance to have friends because she is so focused on getting good grades to please Papa.

One thing I find surprising is how collected and calm Kambili and her brother Jaja are when their father acts out. For example, when they hear see Papa carrying their mother over his shoulder down the stairs, they both silently clean up the blood left behind. I also find it surprising how ironic Papa is because he is so involved in the church and its mission. He seems to use his authority to make him seem like a saint in comparison to the less fortunate people. This is seen when their family travels to their hometown and Papa is seen as "The One Who Does for the Community."

This weekend, my friends and I went ice-skating. The whole week before, we had planned it out, and we were all so excited. Whenever we drove to the rink, there were so many cars and I was under the impression that it was going to be so crowded. I was quite disappointed because I knew it wouldn't be as much fun if there were loads of people there. As we walked inside, I felt the air grow colder and I immediately got so much more excited.        I put on my skates and I went onto the ice. To my surprise, the ice skating rink was not crowded and I knew I would have fun. When I stepped onto the ice, I realized I hadn't skated in what felt like years. I practiced along the edges until I could finally do it on my own. My friends and I were having so much fun, we didn't even realize the time. We were all so upset  at the fact that is was time to go. So, we all took off our skates, and we knew that we would come back soon.

ATDPTI Response

So far, I am really enjoying The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Reading it during the writing process of our research papers really relieves the stress of it all. One thing that I find very interesting about this book is the use of humor. I like that the book is funny but i also think that it is interesting how the author uses humor to discuss more serious topics. However, I think it is fitting for the narrator of this book because of his age. While reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I think it is very interesting how it is written in a diary-like format. If it was written like a regular book, it wouldn’t be nearly as good because you couldn’t see inside Junior’s head as he develops through his journey. Like the writing format, I also think that the pictures add a lot to the development of Junior as a character. In a novel format, the narrator could say that Junior wants to be a cartoon artist, but showing the cartoons themselves really empha...

Fall Break

Fall break is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives me time to relax and do whatever I want. My break started off with having a friend over to spend the night. While she was over, we went to the Episcopal football game and met up with some people there. We stayed until the very end and cheered on the Knights. After the game, we went back to my house and watched some movies.        The next day, we went to the mall. It was so much fun because we got to walk around and shop. One of my favorite stores at the mall is Sephora. We went to Sephora and tested all of the newest make-up and skin care products. After a long day of shopping, we went to the food court and got some ice cream. Once we had both gotten home, I spent the next few days relaxing and taking a break from school.
