The Very Old Man With Enormous Wings

The short story The Very Old Man With Enormous Wings is a story about a peculiar man with wings who upsets the whole town. The over all setting of this story is in a small town on the coast sometime in the twentieth century. The story demonstrates a very eerie, gloomy vibe through the characters actions and words. For example, it describes the very old man as a pitiful circus animal and often refer to him as a "captive". The weather is also described as a rainy, ash-grey day, which creates a sad scene.

One of the questions I have about VOMEW is how did the angel get there in the first place, or was he there by accident? Was he sent there to make things better? If so, he may have completed his mission, while sacrificing himself. For example, the sick child no longer had a fever when he arrived. But, while he made this family happy by bringing them money and health, he was held hostage and ridiculed by other citizens.

  1. I like how you look deeper into the story for questions! I didn't even think that he was making the family's life better. Good job.

Fall Break

Fall break is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives me time to relax and do whatever I want. My break started off with having a friend over to spend the night. While she was over, we went to the Episcopal football game and met up with some people there. We stayed until the very end and cheered on the Knights. After the game, we went back to my house and watched some movies.        The next day, we went to the mall. It was so much fun because we got to walk around and shop. One of my favorite stores at the mall is Sephora. We went to Sephora and tested all of the newest make-up and skin care products. After a long day of shopping, we went to the food court and got some ice cream. Once we had both gotten home, I spent the next few days relaxing and taking a break from school.

Thanksgiving Break

During my thanksgiving break, the first thing I did was go to drivers ed. It felt just like school because I would have to get up early and I wouldn't get home until four. Although the class itself was boring, my friend Katherine was also there, so that made it much better. Once we were done with class, we would go to the mall or Perkins Rowe. Four days later, we were done with the class, and we could finally relax.           On thanksgiving day, I woke up and watched the parade with my family. This is something I've done ever since I was little. Our thanksgiving meal didn't take that much time because it was just me, my parents, and my sister who were eating at our house. This year was very different because all of my other Thanksgivings were with my whole family, so it was nice to have a small meal with just us four. Once the holiday had passed, I spent time with my friends and took time to relax.

Strengths and Challenges

After a lot of writing in class, I have found that some of my strengths are organization, and voice. While writing the research paper, one of the things I found most important was making sure I stay on track and that all of my points relate back to my thesis. I have seen this strength develop from the personal narrative, where I would sometimes catch myself drifting from my theme. Also in my writing this year, I have been able to address the rhetorical situation, and choose a fitting voice. For example, in the personal narrative, I knew my audience would want an entertaining story, so I used a more playful voice. And for my literary analysis, I knew my voice should be more formal. This year I found word choice and conventions challenging. For most of my writing this year, I would try to find words that try and convey the meaning I wanted, but it was hard for me. Also, if I would sit down and write for a while, I would sometimes get sloppy and make simple mistakes in my grammar or ...
