Purple Hibiscus Response

As we read more of Purple Hibiscus, I enjoy it more and more. There was so much change that happened in the most recent reading we had. Some of the things I noticed were the difference in the changes of Jaja and Kambili. Throughout Jaja’s stay in Nsukka, he seems to adapt to this new life fairly quickly. He finds new hobbies like gardening, watching TV, and playing football. He is interested and he accepts the new life that is put before him like he had never known anything else. This goes to show how unhappy Jaja was in his life with his family.

Kambili, on the other hand, seems to be drawn to try new things, but she is constrained to her old life because of her fear of Papa. She always seemed to think about what Papa would think during their stay instead of doing what she wanted to do. Towards the end of their stay, however, Kambili wants to participate in her new life with her cousins, and Papa doesn’t seem to cross her mind that much. I saw most of the change in Kambili when she went home. She socialized with the girls at school, and she stood up to Papa. I think Kambili always knew there was something wrong with the way she was living, but she just needed something to contrast her family’s ways with.

ATDPTI Response

So far, I am really enjoying The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Reading it during the writing process of our research papers really relieves the stress of it all. One thing that I find very interesting about this book is the use of humor. I like that the book is funny but i also think that it is interesting how the author uses humor to discuss more serious topics. However, I think it is fitting for the narrator of this book because of his age. While reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I think it is very interesting how it is written in a diary-like format. If it was written like a regular book, it wouldn’t be nearly as good because you couldn’t see inside Junior’s head as he develops through his journey. Like the writing format, I also think that the pictures add a lot to the development of Junior as a character. In a novel format, the narrator could say that Junior wants to be a cartoon artist, but showing the cartoons themselves really empha...

Fall Break

Fall break is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives me time to relax and do whatever I want. My break started off with having a friend over to spend the night. While she was over, we went to the Episcopal football game and met up with some people there. We stayed until the very end and cheered on the Knights. After the game, we went back to my house and watched some movies.        The next day, we went to the mall. It was so much fun because we got to walk around and shop. One of my favorite stores at the mall is Sephora. We went to Sephora and tested all of the newest make-up and skin care products. After a long day of shopping, we went to the food court and got some ice cream. Once we had both gotten home, I spent the next few days relaxing and taking a break from school.

Concert

This summer, my family and I went on a huge road trip to North Carolina and Washington DC. While we were in the car, we always listened to John Mayer's new album, the Search for Everything. As we listened to it more and more, my whole family started to really love it, and we associated it with our summer. We would listen to it in the car, at cook outs, and just around the house.        As our summer came to an end, my mom asked us if we wanted to go to his concert. I wasn't super excited about it because it was the night before orientation day, so I decided not to go. School was nearing and my sister, Emily, was so excited for the concert, but I didn't want summer to end. The day before orientation day, I went to go get a hair cut, and when I was done it was around 4 pm. My mom asked my on the way home, "Do you want to go to the John Mayer concert?" I was so confused because my sister was about to leave in thirty minutes, and I didn't kno...
